runaway london

Synopsis

Canadian Tara O'Shea is a struggling actress and reluctant supply teacher attempting to adjust to the challenges of a new marriage and her new home in Southeast London. The problem is, Tara's agent seems more interested in boy bands than her faltering career and her overly ambitious, self-help book addicted husband, Jules, is becoming more of a stranger with each passing day.

To make matters worse, Tara's very attractive younger sister, Sophie, suddenly shows up in London without warning, harboring an explosive secret that threatens to tear their dysfunctional family back in Toronto apart. At the same time, Tara is introduced to Carlos, a coworker of Jules' who is struggling to make a foothold in the English music scene, and with whom she immediately feels a strong attraction.

As tensions between she and Jules build, Tara finds herself struggling to deal with Sophie's burgeoning addiction to alcohol and drugs and her own growing feelings for Carlos. Things come to a head when Tara's controlling mother and stepfather, Raul, arrive on her doorstep determined to take Sophie home to Toronto against her will. It’s then that Tara discovers her sister is not the only one who has been harboring secrets...

Set against the backdrop of a vibrant and diverse community in Southeast London that’s in the midst of a struggle to overcome the racial tensions marring its past, Runaway London, is an honest, sometimes funny, narrative journey told from the perspective of three characters who are trying to cope with the responsibilities of adulthood, relationships and the realities of modern, urban life.
